About you
Licensing
To learn to drive on the UK roads, you first need to obtain a Provisional Driving Licence from the Driver Vehicle Licence Agency (DVLA) the government department for the licensing of drivers and vehicles in Great Britain. You can do this before you are 17 – use this link for more information on the process, fees and to apply.
Eyesight
In order to drive on the roads, you need to be able to read a standard number plate from 20.5m, if you need to wear glasses or contact lenses to do this that is not a problem, but you will need to wear this correction whenever you drive.
About me
My journey to become a driving instructor began in 2020 when my 20-year airline pilot career came to a halt due to the premature retirement of the 747, the Jumbo Jet. Looking for a career with a similar blend of machine and skill, set in a complex environment, lead me to qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor, ADI.
About my car
"Gigi", (named by my children), is a 2021 model Ford Fiesta with manual transmission, 1.0 Litre engine and 122 bhp. The compact size and modest performance leads her to be an excellent training car. She has all the safety devices you would expect in a car of that era, ABS, air-bags etc, as well as air-conditioning for pupil comfort. She has “He-Man” Dual Controls fitted for added confidence, safety and security of the trainee driver. She has a selection of basic driver aids such as auto lights and wipers, cruise control and lane keeping but you will be predominantly taught with these features turned off to enable you to confidently go on to drive any car, with or without these features.
